APIW Insurance Woman of the Year Award

Purpose:

APIW is looking for a remarkable woman to honor with the 2008 APIW Insurance Woman of the Year Award, which is presented at our annual cocktail reception in June. APIW has presented an annual award to an outstanding woman in the insurance industry since 1976.

 

Eligibility:

The candidate should be a woman of exceptional achievement who has:  

  1. • Reached a high level of personal achievement within her career
  2. • Demonstrated a strong commitment to APIW’s core values (leadership, mentoring, helping women advance their careers, professional education)
  3. • Made substantial contributions to the insurance industry and to women within the industry

Judging Panel:

All nomination forms for APIW Insurance Woman of the Year will be forwarded to an independent Nomination Committee appointed by the APIW Board. The Committee will be comprised of no more than six (6) accomplished professionals representing various segments of the industry. The Committee will include the current Woman of the Year award recipient and the APIW Immediate Past President. The other members of the committee will be comprised of professionals within the insurance and reinsurance community. No other current member of the APIW Board will serve on the Nomination Committee. To assure continuity from year to year, committee members will be appointed to staggered terms, at the discretion of the APIW Board.

Guidelines for Submitting a Nomination:

All APIW members and non-member industry professionals on APIW’s mailing list will receive a hard copy of the nomination form in the mail. In addition, members and non-members can download a copy of the instructions and nomination form from APIW’s web site (www.apiw.org).

Important details about the nomination form and process:

Your written response will be limited to two (2) pages for criterion 1 and one (1) page each for criteria 2 and 3. Therefore, you will need to be clear and concise in your comments. Enlist the support of the candidate in completing the nomination form. If completing the nomination form electronically, do no use a font size smaller than 10 pt.

In addition to the completed nomination form, you must also submit:

  1. • The candidate’s current resume or curriculum vitae
  2. • A letter of endorsement of the candidate by an executive of her Company. The letter must certify the accuracy of the information submitted in the nomination.

(These items can be mailed separately, if you are using email to send the nomination form.)

Scoring Criteria:

Each candidate will be scored (maximum score of 100) by members of the Nomination Committee on the basis of three criteria:

  1. Exhibits strong leadership qualities and attains a high level of professional achievement in her career. Total of 75 points available. The components adding up to the 75 points are as follows:

     • Executive status achieved, level of responsibility, and impact on the organization; career profile; ability to lead people; leadership positions held within any other organization or group. Up to 35 points

     • Significant career accomplishments and achievements; creative business strategies; new products solutions; income generated or expenses saved. Up to 30 points

     • Professional education; professional designations obtained; special awards, recognition or honors received; speaking engagements; works published. Up to 10 points

  2. Demonstrates a commitment to supporting women and to advancing women’s careers within the industry. 20 points available

    Describe candidates commitment to helping women succeed through mentoring activities; implementing diversity initiatives, flexible work schedules and family-supportive policies; serving as a role model for other women; actively supporting and influencing the advancement of women in the industry and the firm; participating in or otherwise providing support to women’s professional groups, and otherwise exemplifying the mission and values of the APIW.

  3. Gives back to the insurance industry and to the community. 5 points available

    Describe candidate’s activities outside of her firm including participating in women’s organizations and other professional organizations or groups, serving on corporate or advisory boards, participating in special interest groups, contributing time and resources to philanthropic activities or other community service. Also include information about outstanding achievements related to personal interests or hobbies; recognition, awards or honors received; and the impact the candidate has made within the insurance industry and within her community.

The APIW Board will select the award winner from among the three highest scoring candidates.

Deadline:

All nomination forms must be received by January 31, 2008. No forms will be accepted after that date.
